PULIDO TALKS UPCOMING LINE
Dear Folks,
Will you do me a favor?
For years now I’ve been writing wild, edgy comic fiction. It’s unique stuff you can find nowhere else – only in comic book form.
This year Avatar is launching a new line of books I’ve created including BELLADONNA, UNHOLY, GYPSY, KILLER GNOMES & WAR ANGEL. They’re edgy, they’re wild and they are new.
Sometimes we are resistant to new stuff. I remember this from Chaos! Comics. The first time we brought on board a Lady Death artist other than Steven Hughes, readers went ballistic. Then people got to see Ivan Reis’s work and they loved it. It was the same with the first post-Steven Hughes Evil Ernie artist, Justiniano. The guy was amazing. I believed in him, but readers were resistant. Then they saw what he could do and it all changed. Readers loved his art.
I believe that anyone who likes my previous work will like the new titles. Avatar Press publisher William Christensen created an amazing environment where I could simply write stories and not worry about anything else.
Will you try out my new series Belladonna? Give the first issue a read. Let it sink in. See if you like the vibe and see how it compares to all the mainstream titles out there. This month we also have previews of my upcoming series Unholy and Gypsy. These young artists that William has discovered are truly fresh and amazing. Will you give those a try too?
I’m not making this appeal to everyone. Everyone doesn’t dig this stuff the way you do. You really get it. I only ask that you act NOW. Yup go on, march over to your local comic shop and grab an issue or three before they are all gone.
If you dig what you see and read, consider adding the titles to your local comic shop’s subscription service. Hell, turn a friend or five onto the stuff. Independently produced comics are a sweet and rare thing these days. With your help, we can keep them coming.
Thanks in advance,
Brian Pulido
PS – Next time I write you, I’ll reveal our plans for Medieval Lady Death and the much anticipated return of “Classic” Lady Death”.

STARGATE SG-1 CONVENTION SEASON RECAP
by James Anthony Kuhoric
The folks at Avatar Press are fresh off their convention tour for 2004 and I was happy to be a part of it this year. Conventions aren’t new to me, I’ve been doing them as a professional for nearly a decade and most of my life as a fan, but this season I encountered something completely novel on the con trail.
I had a blast!
It happened during my convention appearance at the New York / New Jersey Stargate Convention sponsored by Creation Entertainment. The show was only the second sci-fi show I have attended as a guest, but as a rule all conventions are all pretty much the same (or so I thought). You go to a convention center or hotel and fight your way through a throng of people to get to the attractions or products you came to see. After that you are introduced to horrendously long lines and ridiculous signing fees. Then you are disappointed to meet the celebrities you came to see when you discover they are aloof or standoffish. Round out your experience by paying roughly three times the normal price for the burnt hot-dog and soda you scarf down before leaving to pay the $25 extortion fee to park.
Yeah…I was really looking forward to that again. But the Creation Entertainment Stargate Convention completely changed my opinion of how good a convention can be. From the start, I knew something was different not only with the convention itself, but with the fans attending the show. I was only in the convention center for five minutes before I was greeted by the first of hundreds of excited and happy fans. They all had good things to say about the comics and our stories. Everyone had suggestions and characters they wanted to see in the future and were genuinely interested in hearing stories about the comics. They spoke with one voice in saying “we want more Stargate SG-1 comics!” and believe me, we listened.
The convention itself was great, there was a good mix of available products from photos to apparel. Basically all things Stargate were there. Everyone running the show was helpful and genuinely friendly to those of us attending as guests. It was extremely well organized and efficient all around. But that’s not the best part. The best part is that all of the Stargate SG-1 actors were awesome! They were approachable and seemed to really enjoy interacting with the fans. I met Don Davis, Chris Judge, Tony Amendola, and Teryl Rothery (unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to meet Michael Shanks) and each was a pure joy to interact with. They too liked the comics, although Don Davis told me twice that he didn’t want us to make him “so fat” in the comics, and I get the feeling by his serious tone he was only half kidding. Let me tell you, Don Davis looks like he could go 10 rounds with the champ in real life. That guy is in shape. And Teryl…well, lets just say that even an old dog like me was tongue tied like a teenager when trying to talk with her. Teryl is pure class and one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of talking with.
The actors were accessible to everyone. They talked and joked with fans while posing for pictures and signing autographs. Everyone had a chance to really get to know the cast in a friendly open atmosphere. The convention was simply the most fun I have had at a convention in a very long time.
I wanted to take a minute to thank all the fans who stopped by to talk with me and give your two cents on the Stargate comics we have been publishing. We listened to your requests and you’ll be seeing many of the character requests you gave us appearing in future issues. This show really changed my opinion of the whole convention scene and I honestly can’t wait to attend some of the 2005 Creation Stargate Conventions.
Oh, one last thing. Keep that fan feedback coming! We want to keep an open line of communication with you, the fans, so the Stargate SG-1 comics can be the best possible!
Sincerely,
James Anthony Kuhoric

PULIDO’S KILLER GNOMES RAKES IN AWARDS AT FESTIVAL
There’s Something Out There, the 16 minute horror film written, produced and directed by Brian Pulido took two prizes at the Cine Macabre Horror & Sci Film Festival. Cine Macabre is the biggest genre festival in the South East and TSOT won the following awards:
1) Best short film
2) Most frightening film
Congratulations to Brian. Here’s more info on Killer Gnomes:
KILLER GNOME ON THE LOOSE!
Scottsdale, Arizona. Brian Pulido, Chaos! Comics founder and creator of beloved evil characters Lady Death, Evil Ernie and others has just completed his first short horror film. The sixteen minute short “There’s Something Out There” was shot on film and is based on an original screenplay by Pulido and produced through his production company, Eternal Entertainment.
“I’ve been a dedicated horror fan since I was a kid, “Pulido confides. “Directing my first on screen murder was a delight”. Filmed in and around a townhouse in Scottsdale Arizona over six nights, the story revolves around Penny and Brad, a couple with marital problems. When Brad brings home a garden gnome to protect the garden, an innocent gift turns into a murderous nightmare as the pint-sized killer takes protecting the garden to a terrifying, relentless extreme. “I must have been haunted by those Travelocity commercials,” Pulido confesses.
To fund the film, Pulido sold his comic book collection on E-Bay. “It took a couple of months, but we did it,” Pulido says. “I can thanks Marvel’s monster comics for starting my film career.” A talented crew including an award winning cameraman, sound designer, composer and visual effects team all jumped on board, but Pulido credits the actors performance for selling the terror. “The cast is amazing. Patti Tindall our heroine had a very demanding, physical role. Her character is frail in the beginning, but taps into unknown strength to combat the gnome. Patti got thirty cuts and bruises by the end of production. I’m proud of that.”
With a garden gnome as the threat can audiences expect a laugh riot?” Make no mistake, this is an intense horror movie. This gnome is a crazed, driven predator. I love evil in otherwise innocent things,” Pulido says. “I’m paying homage to the Zulu Warrior story from “Trilogy of Terror” with Karen Black. The story was contained to one location like mine. The Zulu seems innocent at first, but you realize it is insane.”
To support the upcoming release of “There’s Something Out There” this winter on DVD (along with a host of extras), Avatar Press is releasing the comic book KILLER GNOMES #1, written by Pulido. “This is a chance to expand on the story, not just adapt it. There’s more to these murderous devils than meets the eye and we get a taste of that in the comic.”
Pulido’s Eternal Entertainment is developing a feature length version of “There’s Something Out There” and several other horror screenplays for production. “Once you’ve dipped your hands in stage blood, there’s no going back, ” Pulido says.
