Welcome to Free Comic Book Day Readers

There are many new readers visiting the site in recent times after picking up our Frank Miller's Robocop / Stargate SG-1 and Avatar Graphic Novel Sampler Free Comic Book Day offerings, and whether you are new to the world of comics, are coming back to the scene after many years, or are already a regular reader, we would like to thank you for your interest in Avatar Press. Avatar Press and the writers and artists we work with have a lot to offer readers of various interests, and we hope you'll consider picking up Avatar Press comics again soon.

Comic Books in 2003

You've probably seen movies like Daredevil, Spider-Man, and X2 in recent times. Perhaps you didn't realize this, but other films from recent years such as Road to Perdition, From Hell, and Men In Black were also based on comic books. As different as some of those films are from one another, they only scratch the surface of the kind of diversity available in comic books today. There are quality comics out there for adults as well as children covering a variety of subjects and interests.

Superheroes like the X-Men and Spider-Man are a large and important part of comics today, just as they always have been, but comic books offer much more now too. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Crime Suspense/Thrillers, Horror, and numerous other genres are well represented in the comic book medium. Ask the salespeople at the store where you got your free comics on Saturday for suggestions in the areas that interest you, you're sure to find something good to read.

About Avatar Press

Avatar Press has been publishing comics since around 1997, and we have published nearly 400 comic books since then. We are what the comic book industry calls an independent publisher, which means in this industry about what it means in most other areas in the entertainment field -- we are a small but thriving company that brings a different focus and point of view to the comics we publish from that of some of the traditional giants of the field.

But that's not to say we don't think some of those large companies like Marvel and DC are putting out some good comics. Some of the things they are doing are outstanding, and indeed a few of the top creators who have worked for those companies have also done work at Avatar Press. But independents like Avatar bring a much-needed variety and fresh perspective to the field, and Avatar Press has become one of the leading independent publishers in comics in recent years.

A few of the titles Avatar has been known for in recent times include Warren Ellis' Strange Killings, a dramatic thriller about a British SAS soldier who also happens to be a combat magician, Alan Moore's The Courtyard, a tale of psychological horror that is a homage of sorts to the work of pulp horror giant HP Lovecraft, and Warren Ellis' Scars, a crime story of a cop pushed over the edge by a series of child abductions and slayings.

As you may have seen on Free Comic Book Day, Avatar is also starting a line of comics based on some of your favorite science fiction movies and tv shows. The first of these, Frank Miller's Robocop, is available for preorder right now from the comic shop where you picked up your free comics. We also have a Stargate SG-1 comic book coming soon.

Avatar Press is also well known for working with some of the best talents the comic book field has to offer. Writer Warren Ellis is considered one of the best writers working in comics today, and has been featured in Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone magazine. Alan Moore is often called one of the best writers in the history of the comic book medium, and is the creator of the comics upon which the films From Hell and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are based. Frank Miller is the legendary creator of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and other works which have shaped the way we think about comics in the modern day. Garth Ennis, Joe R. Lansdale, Tim Truman, Steven Grant, and many of the other writers and artists who are working with Avatar are considered to be the field's brightest stars.

These are just a few of the titles Avatar Press has published, and some of the creators we work with. Explore the titles in the side menu bars of this page and check out the titles section for an idea of some of the other things we have done.
