The SIGNED Hero Worship #1 SDCC Variant, Available Direct to Retailers

Zak Penn and Scott Murphy will join Avatar Press at San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate the launch of Hero Worship #1, their new comic book miniseries of superheroes revered — and manipulated — as celebrity icons. Penn is Hollywood’s premiere superhero screenwriter, with numerous Marvel films under his belt (Avengers, Incredible Hulk, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand), while Murphy is one of the guiding forces behind Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars computer-generated cartoon show. They will be signing at Avatar Booth #2701.

To commemorate their promotional appearance at SDCC, Avatar Press is creating a special limited edition comic book, the HERO WORSHIP #1 SDCC EDITION. Avatar will make this comic available for retailers for direct order — a first for the company — as a special SIGNED edition that will otherwise never be offered through other channels. This is a rare opportunity to pick up creator autographs from two of Hollywood’s elite!

Here’s a look at the cover image, plus information on how retailers can order this product directly from Avatar Press.

If you’d like more insight into the great Hero Worship series , please visit some of our previous behind-the-scenes coverage, including the first announcement, an in-depth interview with Zak Penn, a revealing interview with Scott Murphy, and finally, a nine-page preview and interview with artist Michael DiPascale.

New Issue Preview: DICKS #6

The hilarious writer/artist team of Garth Ennis and John McCrea are at it again, in tomorrow’s release of Dicks #6!

We’ve met the Dicks duo before, Ivor and Dougie, the two would-be private detectives from Belfast. They’ve had many a misadventure, stealing from crimelords, antagonizing in-laws, and just generally pulling shenanigans in the seedy underworld. But now, directionless as they are unlucky, these two are headed to America as the newest music sensation… and the first stop on their gig is perhaps the most outlandish they’ve ever experienced (which is saying a lot). These two are going… to space.

Check out our preview below!

Written by one of Avatar’s chief architects, Garth Ennis (Crossed: Badlands, Stitched), with artwork by the ever-talented John McCrea (Hitman, The Demon), Dicks #6 is available tomorrow in two cover editions: Regular and Offensive (censored below to protect the faint of heart). Avatar also has a Classic Black-and-White edition available as an incentive to eligible retailers.

New Issue Preview – HERO WORSHIP #1

We are proud to share the preview for Hero Worship #1, a new comic miniseries written by Zak Penn and Scott Murphy, featuring artwork by Michael DiPascale. Zak Penn, as you may know from our previous coverage, is Hollywood’s premiere screenwriter for Marvel superheroes, with five Marvel film scripts under his belt: X2, Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers. Scott Murphy is one of the key writers on Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Michael DiPascale is one of Avatar’s (and sister company Boundless Comics’) go-to cover artists for such titles as Crossed, Night of the Living Dead, Lady Death, and War Goddess.

Hero Worship takes place in an America fascinated by its single superhuman, the ultimate celebrity known as Zenith. Crowds show up in the thousands whenever a disaster takes place, eager to see him in action (and sometimes putting themselves in danger just for a glimpse). For the young man named Adam, Zenith is a bit of an obsession — he idolizes and constantly thinks about Zenith in the way that other people might devote themselves to a rock band, a sports athlete, or a television show. So what happens when one day, Adam himself begins to develop powers of his own? When he’s become the very thing he once revered? Adam discovers that Zenith’s existence is not anything like he once dreamed — it’s a dangerous new landscape of manipulation and media, marketing and mania.

Enjoy our nine-page preview below!

Hero Worship #1 is the first chapter in a six-issue series, debuting tomorrow with two standard-issue cover options: Regular and Wraparound. Some comic shops may also have the rare Heroic edition on sale, an incentive edition only eligible to qualifying retailers. Look for them at your LCS tomorrow!

New Issue Preview – DAN THE UNHARMABLE #3

David Lapham‘s Dan the Unharmable has everything a mature reader could want out of comics: bad-ass characters, explosive violence, completely unexpected weirdness, and sex appeal. What happens in this issue… man, I can’t even tell you how wild and crazy it gets. Lapham kicks all kinds of ass.

In Dan the Unharmable #3, Lizzy’s quest to save her siblings takes a disastrous wrong turn. Not only does her indestructible, amnesiac father have to face one of the most unbelievable assassins ever, but her Uncle Humpy is on the run from the police, and the insidious cult that’s after her has infiltrated some rather unexpected organizations, making even the most helpful of friends suspect.

Let’s give the third issue a whirl, shall we?

Dan the Unharmable #3 is illustrated by Rafael Ortiz, and is available in comic shops tomorrow with two standard issue cover variants: Regular and Wraparound. Eligible retailers may also stock a third cover option, the incentive Retro edition.

Long-Lost Alan Moore Masterwork FASHION BEAST Launches in September

Avatar Press proudly announces the upcoming September 2012 launch of Fashion Beast, an unearthed collaboration between legendary graphic novelist Alan Moore and punk rock pioneer Malcolm McLaren. Originally written as a screenplay, the ten-issue maxi-series is adapted to comics by longtime Moore partner Antony Johnston (The Courtyard, Daredevil) and beautifully illustrated by Facundo Percio (Anna Mercury). Set in a dystopian future dominated by a fashion house, Fashion Beast reinvents the classic Beauty and the Beast fable in a society held together (quite literally) by a needle and a thread.

Fashion Beast introduces young Doll Seguin, a spirited and sassy coat-checker working at a trendy nightclub. While the world outside fears an oncoming nuclear war, Doll escapes into the carefree lifestyle of music and decadence, a fantasy inspired by the fashion designs of the mysterious Celestine. Catching the deformed recluse?s eye, Doll is drawn helplessly into a sordid tale of tragic lies, false identities, fear, and violence.

Alan Moore wrote Fashion Beast as a screenplay in 1985, during the very same period of stunning creativity that yielded such masterpieces as Watchmen, Miracleman, Swamp Thing, and V for Vendetta. The project came to be when Malcolm McLaren, the impresario and fashion designer best known for founding the Sex Pistols, approached him with the offer to write for film, a first for Moore. He eagerly accepted McLaren?s Fashion Beast concept and set to the task of writing its almost 200-page script. “I wanted to work with Malcolm McLaren,” recalled Moore in a 2000 interview. ?He?s somebody that I (had) a lot of admiration for and, you know, it was a laugh.?

“The screenplay that I turned in was just what he wanted,? said Moore. Renowned for his dense comic scripts, he added, ?I remember him saying that I really ought to leave something for the director to do, because I was writing the screenplay the way I would one of my comics, where you?re talking about camera angles, you?re talking about composition. But yeah, it was fun.”

Never before published, the story of Fashion Beast developed into a comic book series after the 2003 meeting of McLaren and William Christensen, president of Avatar Press. The series launches in September with a #1 issue, available at fine comic book specialty shops throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Avatar Press will publish the first issue with two standard cover editions, allowing fans the freedom of choice:

Fashion Beast #1 Regular Cover Edition
$3.99 SRP, Diamond Item Code: JUL120796

Fashion Beast #1 Wraparound Cover Edition
$3.99 SRP, Diamond Item Code: JUL120797

Retailers may also be eligible to order limited edition variant editions in two formats, the Haute Couture and Tarot editions, as per the criteria indicated in Diamond Comic Distributors? July Previews catalog.

Make Your Voice Heard! Support CROSSED: WISH YOU WERE HERE at your Local Comic Shop!

Earlier this month, we posted an article promoting the Crossed: Wish You Were Here Volume 1 graphic novel, which is available for fan and retailer pre-order through the June Previews catalog.? We are proud that Diamond Comics selected the first volume of this new Crossed project as a Featured Item for the month!

With the Previews catalog deadline looming (which means that retailers need to place their pre-orders with Diamond this coming Thursday, just three days away), we’re down to the wire to make sure that the local comic shops know that the fans are on-board for the new book!? When you visit your favorite retailer on “New Comic Wednesday, be sure to tell ’em to reserve a copy for you!? The whole gang here at Avatar Press will love you for it, especially Simon Spurrier and Javier Barreno, who’ve put so much effort into making this book come alive.

To give you a sense of where Wish You Were Here begins, here’s Spurrier’s own description…

The Crossed pandemic swept through London like a lightsaber through slug meat. Out in the countryside, people might have stood a chance ? to run, to hide, to never look back ? but in the city? Penned in, seething with visitors and vendors, tourists and tarts??

Imagine it. The Trafalgar Square fountains running with blood? the Soho streets ? previously the haunt of trendy haircuts and media-monkeys ? now swarming with sadists? a plane strikes the London Eye like an angry angel and cleaves it in two; red buses rampage like mobile abattoirs; fires gnash at the famous skyline, and ? above it all ? the endless sound of laughter. Cruel, childlike, vicious?

Imagine the city transformed ? a labyrinth plucked from the heart of Hell ? and you?ll understand that the odds of anyone getting out alive and uninfected would be a million to one. And then recall that London has ? or rather had ? a population of seven million. Which means that a handful of people? a handful of impossibly-lucky guys, by the law of averages alone, might just have made it…

Shaky is one of them. Winner of the most important lottery in the world: ejected from a maelstrom of close-shaves and crippling traumas that took him from a quiet Soho caf? ? writing overblown spandex comics as does every other day ? to the bloody banks of the Thames Barrier seven miles downriver. Born again into a changed world, tasked with finding a new reason to live. A new sanctuary. And, when he gets there, to wonder What The Hell comes next?

The first volume of the ongoing Crossed: Wish You Were Here graphic novel series can be found in the June Previews catalog on page 251. It’s available in three cover editions: Softcover, Hardcover, and a special Signed Hardcover with autographs from Spurrier and cover artist Jacen Burrows (of Crossed: Badlands and Neonomicon fame). See below for a sampling of interior pages; just click on the pics to see the large version!

Fans, please don’t forget to place your pre-orders with your local comic shop no later than this Thursday, June 28th… and retailers, please don’t forget to place your initial orders with Diamond!
