New This Week: CAPTAIN SWING Graphic Novel

In stores today, Avatar Press proudly releases the graphic novel presentation of Warren Ellis’ epic steampunk tale, CAPTAIN SWING AND THE ELECTRICAL PIRATES OF CINDERY ISLAND! Ennis, the critically acclaimed creator of PREACHER and CROSSED, drags the whole world into the gutter with his trademark razor-sharp dialogue and biting wit.

Harold Lorre, from CROSSED: PSYCHOPATH

Outward appearances would have you believe that Harold Lorre is gaunt, crippled, helpless… weaknesses that would otherwise make him a victim in a world overrun by evil Crossed berserkers. But Lorre is far and above the most dangerous maniac ever to grace the pages of an Avatar Press comic book. His appetite for women, his bloodlust for men, his depraved reflections on his lost beloved… and most horrific of all, we’re invited into his mind through the entire grisly tale. When he removes a woman’s lips to hold onto her kiss, we are made to understand exactly why. Doesn’t that give you shivers?

But when the bastard died, he found an empty throne in Hell… and promptly filled the position. Bent on revenge, this demonic despot insinuates his way into our world (and computer systems), driving men to madness, ruining Wormwood’s life, and hunting down poor Jimmy the Rabbit.

The Garoulle de la Mer, when provoked, can tear a human being to pieces, but its true threat is not physical… but rather the promise that it is herald for a world-ending elder god. Cthulhu fhtagn!

But among the endless throng of staggering ghouls, one particular ghoul stood out as the most terrifying of all: Karen, a little girl infected by a zombie bite. With a garden trowel in hand, she stalked her shocked mother and consumed her. Avatar Press expanded on Karen’s story in its first NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD comic book story, revealing just how this little girl became infected, and ultimately how sweet the taste of vengeance against her wicked father…

The Ferals, from FERALS

While we can’t give away the secret of our werewolf crime noir FERALS just yet, we can reinforce some spoilers from David Lapham from his recent interviews. First, the Ferals are not your trademarked lycanthropes from film history. They’re a unique kind of person, a primal culture that exists in secret among humanity. Furthermore, they have their own agenda and secrets… and protect their interests with bloody tooth and claw. To survive in the town of Cypress, one must abide by the old adage to “live and let live”… because those with prying eyes are bound to die horribly.

David Lapham Returns to Roots with FERALS, Supernatural Crime Noir from Avatar Press

Comic book and graphic novel publisher Avatar Press proudly announces the latest addition to its expanding line of horror fiction with the ongoing monthly FERALS series, written by genre legend David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Crossed 3D). Featuring the full-color artwork of Gabriel Andrade (Lady Death), FERALS is the carnage-filled tale of an idyllic town besieged by a new breed of werewolves… a new culture, even. The debut #1 issue is solicited through Diamond Comic Distributor?s November Previews catalog for release at comic retail shops in early January 2012.

FERALS #1 introduces Officer Dale Chesnutt, a lawman with a big, bloody problem. Slaughtered civilians are turning up in the sleepy town of Cypress, and the burden falls on him to end the slaughter. But no sooner does he begin his investigation, then he finds himself violently drawn to a sexy, mysterious woman? and a vicious creature strikes again, this time at Dale’s own family.

With its noir feel and small town domestic setting, FERALS brings writer David Lapham to his roots as the creator of the critically acclaimed Stray Bullets series. ?It starts with small town people with their own little Peyton Place dynamic and a small town cop named Dale Chesnutt, who is a charmer, a womanizer, a screw-up,? says Lapham. ?He suddenly is hit by the ?stray bullets? and finds himself in a whole new world that?s plenty dark and twisted.?

With popular supernatural dramas like True Blood and American Horror Story updating horror concepts like vampires and ghosts, FERALS will bring the legendary werewolf mythos into a modern context, but with a radical new slant. According to Lapham, ?This isn?t a take on the mystical werewolf, full moon and all that. The classic werewolf is about a monster, a monster story. FERALS is a drama and a noir where being feral is a very real thing. This is about a different kind of person. A person who is feral could be your neighbor and you wouldn?t know it; he doesn?t change when he?s pissed or when the moon is full. Ferals are real and have their own culture, their own thoughts, history, and plans.?

For the past two years, Avatar Press has happily been the home to David Lapham?s horror tales, including the supernatural Caligula series and his contributions to the runaway success franchise Crossed (including miniseries Crossed: Family Values and Crossed: Psychopath, plus the record-setting bestseller Crossed 3D), wherein the world is overrun by madmen. While his reputation for twisted storytelling was cemented with Avatar?s fans, Crossed devotees especially should expect a completely different feel from FERALS. ?That’s the real trick ? not just make Crossed with fur. FERALS ongoing and we?re following certain characters that we?ll come to know and see evolve through the series. It?s about what happens when you stick your nose into other people?s business. This is about live and let live …or else, die horribly.?

As with many of their comic books, Avatar Press will offer several different cover editions of each FERALS issue, providing fans with the freedom of choice for which graphic, visceral images they want to collect. All cover artwork for issue #1 will be provided by series artist Andrade.

New This Week: NEONOMICON and FREAKANGELS VOLUME 6

It’s a huge release day for Avatar Press, as two of our most critically acclaimed and beloved series are collected into graphic novels and made available to eagerly-awaiting fans! We proudly present, for your reading enjoyment, the Lovecraftian horror tale NEONOMICON and the final chapter of the groundbreaking web series, FREAKANGELS!

In NEONOMICON, comic book legend Alan Moore (Watchmen) and brilliant artist Jacen Burrows deliver a chilling tale of Weird Science in the vein of H.P. Lovecraft! Brears and Lamper, two young and cocky FBI agents, investigate a fresh series of ritual murders somehow tied to the final undercover assignment of Aldo Sax ?the once golden boy of the Bureau, now a convicted killer and inmate of a maximum security prison. From their interrogation of Sax (where he spoke exclusively in inhuman tongues) to a related drug raid on a seedy rock club rife with arcane symbols and otherworldly lyrics, they suspect that they are on the trail of something awful? but nothing can prepare them for the creeping insanity and unspeakable terrors they will face in the small harbor town of Innsmouth. NEONOMICON collects Alan Moore?s comic book series for the first time in its entirety ? including his original graphic novel, THE COURTYARD, which chronicled Aldo Sax?s tragic encounter with the (somewhat) mortal agents of the Old Ones! Available in softcover and hardcover formats, with illustrated covers by Jacen Burrows (CROSSED).

Today, they live in and defend Whitechapel, perhaps the last real settlement in soggy London, from the evil machinations of one of their own ? a ?FreakAngel? gone rogue. But when Mark, the bad seed, returns and forces his old friends to expand their consciousness beyond all concepts of space and time, they discover there?s something coming? something dark and terrible beyond the borders of Whitechapel, closing in for the kill.
