Avatar Press is a comic book publisher which has carved a niche for itself as a company that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Magic Words, Warren Ellis' Strange Killings and Scars, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's irreverent private eye cult classic Dicks, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman's Dead Folks, David Quinn and Tim Vigil's 777: The Wrath, company owned characters such as Pandora and The Ravening, licensed hits such as Frank Miller's Robocop and Stargate SG1, and long-running anthology title Threshold, among numerous other titles -- including comics for mature readers, and other audiences. A company that has established itself as one of the cornerstones of the American indy comic book scene over the past six years, Avatar has published over 350 comic books since 1997.

Previews Supplement: Alan Moore's A Small Killing and more

Diamond Comics Distributors Previews catalog will be in comic shops worldwide beginning today, so here's the latest installment of the Avatar Press Previews Supplement. If you use Previews to figure out what comics you're going to buy each month, this supplement contains additional artwork and information about what we're offering in the catalog this month.

If you're new to comics, Previews is a large catalog of what every comic book publisher is going to be releasing in 2 to 3 months time.  It's become an important tool for retailers and their customers to pre-order what they think they'll be interested in.  These pre-orders are particularly vital to independent companies like Avatar, who don't publish the classic 40 to 60 year old comic characters like Daredevil and Batman, with all the built-in cultural recognition that implies.

This is not to say reading the current adventures of those classic characters is a bad thing.  It's not -- some of them are very good, and some of the same people who have done work on the best of them have done great work with Avatar as well.  Supporting all good comics is important.  But if you're interested in variety and diversity in publishing, and supporting the new generation of comic books, it's very important to let your retailer know about that.  Tell your retailer that you want to buy the titles listed here.  Ask your retailer if you can place a preorder for these titles, and let people know what you think looks good for the month.

Back to what Avatar's got in Previews this month:  Our headline item for the month is Alan Moore's A Small Killing, one of the best graphic novels from one of the most important writers in the history of comics.  One of the most acclaimed writer/artist teams of the past decade, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman, conclude their first collaboration in years with Lansdale and Truman's Dead Folks, Our popular Jungle Girl adventure title Jungle Fantasy continues, and we give you a sneak peak of Marat Mychaels' upcoming Demonslayer: Lords of Night series.  Another diverse, quality month from some of the best creators working today with one of the leading indy publishers in comics.
