Avatar Press is a comic book publisher which has carved a niche for itself as a company that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Magic Words, Warren Ellis' Strange Killings and Scars, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's irreverent private eye cult classic Dicks, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman's Dead Folks, David Quinn and Tim Vigil's 777: The Wrath, company owned characters such as Pandora and The Ravening, licensed hits such as Frank Miller's Robocop and Stargate SG1, and long-running anthology title Threshold, among numerous other titles -- including comics for mature readers, and other audiences. A company that has established itself as one of the cornerstones of the American indy comic book scene over the past six years, Avatar has published over 350 comic books since 1997.

Layman Talks Species

Check out this commentary on our upcoming Species comic by the writer of that series, John Layman.  Layman is the highly-regarded former DC/Wildstorm editor of titles such as Planetary and The Authority, and a talented writer with a number of projects for a variety of publishers on tap for the coming year.

You don't want to go to the movies with me.

I mean, beside the stinking whiskey breath and the wandering hands. Besides the fact that I boo mercilessly at the coming attractions and spit profanity at pre-show commercials. Besides my stubborn refusal to turn my cell phone off, not matter what. No, you really don't want to go to the movies with me.

I'm the kind of guy that, no matter what movie, always needs to one-up the filmmaker. I'm very free with my advice about What They Shoulda Done, and how, if I was permitted to add or omit even a single scene, the "John Layman cut" of this or that movie would be a far superior film.

You could see where I would not be the ideal film date. And you could also see why getting the chance to write a comic based on a movie would be a dream come true. (I've long since ruled out the possibility of me actually working behind a camera. Me filming repeated nude scenes with Natasha Henstridge? Refer to above comments about my lewd behavior, particularly the one about wandering hands.) (...continued)
