Avatar Press is a comic book publisher which has carved a niche for itself as a company that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Magic Words, Warren Ellis' Strange Killings and Scars, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's irreverent private eye cult classic Dicks, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman's Dead Folks, David Quinn and Tim Vigil's 777: The Wrath, company owned characters such as Pandora and The Ravening, licensed hits such as Frank Miller's Robocop and Stargate SG1, and long-running anthology title Threshold, among numerous other titles -- including comics for mature readers, and other audiences. A company that has established itself as one of the cornerstones of the American indy comic book scene over the past six years, Avatar has published over 350 comic books since 1997.

Not sure what this Previews stuff is all about? We talked a bit here about Previews and the importance of pre-ordering or otherwise letting your retailer know what independent comics you want to read.

Some important info about getting Avatar Press comics from your local shop:  For those of you placing preorders at your local comic shop, the official due date for ordering from this month's Previews is August 16.  This date may differ for you local shop, so inquire locally to be sure about when orders are due.  Of course, many local stores will make an effort to get order these books for you at any time before or after any official due date, so it never hurts to ask about the availability of any Avatar Press comic book at any time.  This is also not to say that these book will only be available to you locally via preorder, we hope  retailers order extra copies for their shelves, but it is often difficult for them to know how to gauge demand for a given series, so you can't always count enough extra copies being available in your local area.  That's why getting as many people as possible to let their local retailer know that they these books is so extremely important.
