Avatar Press is a comic book publisher which has carved a niche for itself as a company that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Magic Words, Warren Ellis' Strange Killings and Scars, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's irreverent private eye cult classic Dicks, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman's Dead Folks, David Quinn and Tim Vigil's 777: The Wrath, company owned characters such as Pandora and The Ravening, licensed hits such as Frank Miller's Robocop and Stargate SG1, and long-running anthology title Threshold, among numerous other titles -- including comics for mature readers, and other audiences. A company that has established itself as one of the cornerstones of the American indy comic book scene over the past six years, Avatar has published over 350 comic books since 1997.

June '03 Sneak Peak

We've shown bits and pieces of various June scheduled releases here on the site over the past few days, and here's a rundown of the projects coming from Avatar in June:

  • Warren Ellis' Strange Killings: Strong Medicine -- the definitive adrenaline-rush suspense/drama/horror comic returns, featuring the saga of combat magician William Gravel of Britain's SAS and the razor-sharp, breathtaking storytelling of Warren Ellis and Mike Wolfer.  We'll have much more to say about this major new project shortly.
  • Alan Moore's Writing for Comics -- What is Writing for Comics?  It's something that Moore wrote while he was in the middle of Miracleman and getting started with Watchmen.  It's something that every reader, creator, publisher, and observer of comics is going to want to have on his bookshelf.  This little mystery should be further revealed shortly.
  • Demonslayer: Lords of Night --A new chapter in the Demonslayer saga from Marat Mychaels.  We have word that readers have been seeking out Demonslayer back issues and the Demonslayer trade paperback  (star 15430, isbn 0970678452) collection that Avatar released of the early issues that were individually published through Image, so it's a good time to see what the buzz is about on this project.
  • Hellina: Seduction Preview --  A behind-the-scenes look at the next Hellina mini-series.  Avatar quietly acquired this character - one of the highest profile properties of the 90's indy scene and the subject of action figures, comics, and even an animated short - a couple years ago, and since her official Avatar relaunch began a few months back, it's become quite apparent that the readership is ready to submit to Hell's Mistress once again.

We'll have complete information on Avatar's June releases soon.  Reviewers, news sites, fan sites, and other interested parties should feel free to contact William for more information about these projects in the meantime.
