Avatar Press is a comic book publisher which has carved a niche for itself as a company that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Magic Words, Warren Ellis' Strange Killings and Scars, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's irreverent private eye cult classic Dicks, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman's Dead Folks, David Quinn and Tim Vigil's 777: The Wrath, company owned characters such as Pandora and The Ravening, licensed hits such as Frank Miller's Robocop and Stargate SG1, and long-running anthology title Threshold, among numerous other titles -- including comics for mature readers, and other audiences. A company that has established itself as one of the cornerstones of the American indy comic book scene over the past six years, Avatar has published over 350 comic books since 1997.

April 2003 Previews Supplement

The April 2003 edition of Diamond Comics Distributors Previews catalog is in comic shops worldwide beginning today, so once again here's the latest installment of the Avatar Press Previews Supplement. If you use Previews to figure out what comics you're going to buy each month, this supplement contains pointers to the additional artwork and information about what we're offering in the catalog this month.

If you're new to comics, Previews is a large catalog of what every comic book publisher is going to be releasing in 2 to 3 months time.  It's become an important tool for retailers and their customers to pre-order what they think they'll be interested in.  These pre-orders are particularly vital to independent companies like Avatar, who don't publish the classic comic characters like X-Men and Superman, with all the built-in cultural recognition that implies.  If you're interested in variety and diversity in publishing, and supporting the new generation of comic books, it's very important to let your retailer know about that.  Tell your retailer that you want to buy the titles listed here.  Ask your retailer if you can place a preorder for these titles, and let people know what you think looks good for the month.

We have an important new book about comics for the month with Alan Moore's Writing for Comics, a key addition to the body of works on understanding comics for readers, creators, and commentators in our industry -- and those who might be new to comics as well.  Alan Moore, of course, is one of the best writers in the field and has done more to shape modern comics than just about anyone.

Avatar also launches Warren Ellis' Strange Killings: Strong Medicine for the month of June, by Warren Ellis and Mike Wolfer, as well as Marat Mychaels' Demonslayer: Lords of Night, and a sneak peak at the upcoming Hellina: Seduction mini-series.   Get the full scoop on what's in this month's Previews in our April 2003 Previews supplement.
