Avatar Press is a comic book publisher which has carved a niche for itself as a company that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Alan Moore's The Courtyard and Magic Words, Warren Ellis' Strange Killings and Scars, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's irreverent private eye cult classic Dicks, Joe R. Lansdale and Tim Truman's Dead Folks, David Quinn and Tim Vigil's 777: The Wrath, company owned characters such as Pandora and The Ravening, licensed hits such as Frank Miller's Robocop and Stargate SG1, and long-running anthology title Threshold, among numerous other titles -- including comics for mature readers, and other audiences. Countdown to Free Comic Book Day

As you can see by the appearance of the clickable fcbd banner at the bottom of the main page at the moment, Free Comic Book Day is coming up on Saturday, May 3, and there is a wealth of information on the various fcbd festivities available at the fcbd website.

Now in its second year, Free Comic Book Day has quickly become the comic book industry's #1 outreach program to the general public. A number of the major comic book publishers, including Avatar Press, have banded together to promote comic books in general and give away a variety of comics for free through participating retailers. The event is scheduled to take place the weekend X-Men 2 movie opens -- again, that's Saturday, May 3.

Avatar Press is a Gold Level Sponsor of FCBD 2003, stepping up to the plate alongside publishers such as Marvel and DC Comics at that level this year.  This is perhaps Avatar's largest ever promotional effort and we're using it to spread the word about quality Avatar Press comics featuring the stellar efforts of creators like Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, Steven Grant, Antony Johnston, Mike Wolfer, Jacen Burrows, Juan Jose Ryp, and a number of others to be announced, in Frank Miller's Robocop / Stargate SG1 FCBD edition and The Avatar Graphic Novel Sampler.

The launch of Frank Miller's Robocop is going to be one of the major debut titles from any publisher this year, and you can get your first taste of it free (we'll have sneak peak of new Frank Miller cover art from issue one of the series launch itself posted here at the site shortly, as well as incredible art from the Geof Darrow meets Brian Bolland style of unleased insanity of Frank Miller's Robocop artist Juan Jose Ryp, who has Alan Moore's Another Suburban Romance coming up as well).  The Avatar Graphic Novel Sampler features material from one of the finest graphic novel libraries that any publisher has to offer, and you'll be able to see that for yourself as well.  Check back here in the coming weeks for more information on these projects as it becomes available.
